Elon Musk Criticizes Decisions Against Freedom by Moraes
A congressional commission, consisting mostly of Republican lawmakers, opposes the government of US President Joe Biden. Entitled ‘The Assault on Freedom of Speech Abroad and the Silence of the Biden Administration: the Case of Brazil,’ the report accuses the governments of Brazil and the United States of attempting to silence critics on social media. This comes following a series of criticisms by billionaire Elon Musk, owner of X, against decisions by Minister Moraes that involve the suspension of accounts sharing false information, particularly regarding the Brazilian electoral process.
Minister Moraes Faces Backlash from Elon Musk
In the Brazilian context, the report references opponents of the government affected by these decisions, such as former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Senators Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES) and Alan Rick (União Brasil-AC), Federal Deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), and Roberto Jefferson’s daughter, Cristiane Brasil. Musk, known for his outspoken nature, predicted potential US sanctions against Brazil due to Minister Moraes’ actions, which raises concerns about freedom of expression and government censorship.
International Investigation into Moraes’ Decisions
To address the threats posed by anti-freedom governments abroad, the committee issued a subpoena to X Corp. for documents related to recent efforts by the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court and the Supreme Federal Court to compel X to censor social media in the country. The committee further requested all communications between the US State Department and the Brazilian government regarding orders or demands from the Brazilian courts concerning the suspension or removal of X accounts. Metrópoles reached out to the Supreme Federal Court for comments on this matter and is awaiting a response.
